My Top 10 Moving and Packing Tips

The Big Move

Do you stress out just thinking about making a move from one coast to the other? Well, I have some fantastic tips to make the entire process a breeze. Actually, these remarkable moving tips can help you with ANY move, no matter the distance.

  • If your apartment lease isn’t up yet, but you have to move because of job change or because you just want to move to another place, submit your apartment for rent on every possible classified advertisement website that pertains to your area and beyond.
  • Before listing, make sure to check your current apartment lease and with your landlord if you can sublet your apartment. Usually the landlord will need to meet the new tenant. Integrity is key!
  • If you’ll be moving across states and you aren’t married to your furniture, sublet your apartment furnished. Price out your furniture by checking Craigslist, Ebay and other sites. This will help reduce the amount of items you’ll need to move to your next place.
  • This is the PERFECT time to donate all those unwanted clothes and accessories you’ve collected. If you haven’t worn them in a year, drop them off at a Goodwill! Bu-bye!
  • Donate all of your basic kitchen utensils and other home furnishings so you don’t need to lug them to your new home (especially if your new home is an airplane ride away). Unless you can’t live without that crockpot of course. ;) You’ll be able to look forward to purchasing new items for your new place! I can help you with all your shopping needs — Just Ask me.
  • About a month prior to your move, start packing your favorites a little each day so it doesn’t get overwhelming. A big cross country move (or any move) is overwhelming in itself!
  • If you’ll be flying to a new home, check out Virgin Air’s checked baggage details. A passenger can check up to 10 bags at $25 a piece. That’s cheaper than shipping! Just remember to not go over the 50 pound limit. No matter the airline, always read the fine print about the dimensions of the boxes that the airlines will take on board. It’s better to know before you arrive at the airport.
  • If you don’t have a scale, borrow or buy one! This way you can weigh your boxes and luggage so you don’t go over the weight limit when checking in at the airline counter.
  • When your luggage has been zipped up and your boxes are all taped up, hire a car service to help you haul everything to the airport. Make sure they can help you bring everything to the counter. Yes, they will do this for a price!
  • Make sure the airline tags all of your boxes and bags correctly. You don’t want anything to go missing or get lost.
